There is already a technique called gravity assisted drainage (GAD) that has been used for bronchitis.

I'm thinking that having people sit upright in their hospital beds is even worse than having them lay flat.
Before I found GAD, I was thinking it might help to have patients lay in a declined bed and also apply a vibration to the bed in order to help assist breaking the mucus loose and draining it out.
