The first 300 or so pages IIRC are a really annoying way of defining self-reference in that they keep repeating, likely purposely designed that way by the author.
Cambridge has a list of books in pop math and readable textbooks if you're interested https://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/documents/reading-list.pdf/

treat it more as a for-fun-and-jest book that treats its ill-defined subject matter with a lot of respect. it makes more sense that way. there are other texts that this can led into if you want a more "serious" approach of it

I had a hard time reading it as a teen, I checked it out again a week ago and I got bored.

I read tons of nonfiction, hard math and compsci textbooks, but I can't read that book. It's like the author wants to waste your time.
