Nothing against linguistics as a field, I think it's cool, but I wouldn't study to enter a profession that is going to be replaced in the near term. Maybe if you were considering a language more distant from english, but realtime speech to speech, english to spanish machine translation is getting pretty close to fully functional.

The quality of machine translation between english and french is very close to that of spanish. But it's still pretty bad for east asian languages.
