I got my physics BS this Winter and recently got a job as a Systems Engineer at a big defense contractor company.
I've wanted to get into R&D for a while now, but because money was getting tight and my GPA wasn't stellar I didn't try to make it to grad school right after graduating, as I figured I'd be able to work some and either get an MS while I work full time at some job or leave after 2 years and go back to grad school.
I recently got employed at a big defense contractor as a systems engineer and it hardly requires any technical knowledge so far and it feels like I'm wasting time. I've heard that once you get your foot in the door to companies like these that a lot of opportunities open up to you, but I'm finding it hard to see them.
TL;DR, do any of you have experience going from a career back to school, or from a less technical job to a more technical one after some years? Is it even possible to get in a PhD program after working in a nontechnical job?
