How did life that had a tendency to reproduce and survive due to formation of shapes eventually become life that consciously WANTS to survive and reproduce? Where did this want come from?

I understand why it would get selected for by evolution but I do not understand how it came about in the first place. How did matter start to do things like wanting and thinking and so on?

I have the same question. Of course behavior makes sense as a product of brain activity, and the brain makes sense as an evolved control mechanism for an organism. but other humans exist without me being conscious of their lives. So why wasn't I the same way? Why am I conscious of the human that I am? I guess every person has a soul or consciousness particle, for lack of a better term. But stuff like what Oliver sacks describes casts doubt on that.

Theory of natural selection seems to imply that it comes about purely by chance and gets selected for being advantageous. So yeah, random mutation.
No idea if this is actually case but that's what I would intuit from evolution, but it just sucks because it's a boring answer.
