Yes, you need a lot of practice with synthetic geometry to understand anything.
Newton refused to use coordinates because he believed it was a way of dumbing down mathematics and he refused to use limits, series, integrals and derivatives because he wanted to keep calculus secret as his trump card so he could discover more theorems than others.

If you know medieval Latin, not hard.
But with very basic geometry knowledge, you can pick up Opticks. It's a damn good read.
