Why can’t we grow organs yet?

Scientists know how stem cells work and how the body develops. We can grow organelles in the lab.

Why can’t we grow full size organs? If my lungs get rekt from Coronavirus, just grow me a new pair. What is the problem here?

Essentially, challenges arise in having the organs hold their shape, rather than be a jelly organ. The functional cells themselves are easy to make. What is required is a pre-existing scaffolding for the cells to attach to. In our real bodies, this scaffolding consists of collagen and other proteins or enzymes.
Printing the scaffolding is hard.

So, one prospective method in this field is using say a pig heart, completely decellularize it, leaving only the scaffolding behind, and then printing human heart cells into it.
But there are also other methods being pursued.

Lastly, revascularization is a major challenge as well, and would be crucial for developing more complex organs.

Heart tissue and liver splices aren't hearts and livers, just like 500 pounds of beef is not a cow. Organs organize their cells in particular ways to achieve the effect that they do and the technology to replicate that just isn't there yet. >>11569060 is a good post.

Implanting stem cells and encouraging repair is hopeful however. Or mutating pigs.

Are you guys forgetting about the Pig-farmed organs that scientists just banned years ago?

The idea was to use stem-cells from the recipient, inject it to the embryo of a pig, inject it to the womb of a sow, the pig shall grow with adult human organs that you can safely transfer to the recipient.
It was expected to cost just 1/3 of the traditional donated organs

Then they banned it due to ethical concerns like what if the pig grew 51% human organs? Is it still a pig?
What if it had a human brain? Is it still a pig?

Once again, morality got in the way of progress. I don't blame them though.

As much as I'd love to get a new pair of lungs, I'm not sure that they're going to work or grow right without a diaphragm placement and graph balloons on the inside. I'm no doctor, but that seems doable; given enough stem cell allotment from our counterparts.
