You will never find a material explanation for the underlying mechanism because there is no material explanation. All you can see are the effects, but the cause is a black box that objectively exists but can not be empirically studied under the ontology of materialism because the cause is not material.
Also, I'm not just talking about consciousness. There are many effects that are not consciousness that happen in material whose causes are objectively and fundamentally non-material, we can observe the effects but the underlying cause is forever out of reach in terms of material explanation. And this is not a "matter of our ignorance which will be solved later" we've already gotten to the end of the line on these fronts.
