given an n-element ring shaped array and a step of length i, how do you find a number of different cycles needed to visit every element

ive been thinking about it for a while, looking at data but cant really come up with anything

I see you are assuming that number like that doesn't exist on a picture.

If difference of n and i is odd, it does exist...

And there is a how much of it moves on overlap aspect, that defines how many times you have to overlap if you use it correctly.

This sounds like it has the flavor of algebra and number theory. You basically have the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ under addition, and want to ask if i is a generator, and the lowest power if i (call it k, where powers here mean successively adding) for which $\{ 0, 1, \dots, n - 1 \} \subseteq \{ i, i^2, \dots, i^k \}$ . Given this, I think you can do the rest of the research / thinking by yourself.

on modern hardware, sure. But we're talking about being fast in principle, ie actual closed form formula.

that's not true. If n = 6 and i = 3, then you will never hit the remaining 4 elements of the array.

In only real life use case in encryption n is prime number. It has for sure uneven overlap with three and with number three you can define how many walks over a circle it takes in +1 exponent.

yes, we use prime numbers because the actual answer is that we can actually touch all neighbors if gcd(n, i) = 1. It's a trivial consequence from basic group theory. The answer to this question is that if gcd(n, i) = 1, then we cycle around i times.
