It's not very /sci/, but I found Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Rumelt to be very thought provoking. Whenever I approach difficult decisions I now do so through the paradigm set out in that book. It's business focused because that's Rumelt's background but it's not hard to extrapolate the ideas beyond that

Einstein loved Dostoievsky. There’s a quote by him that mentions his deep admiration: “Dostoievsky gives me more than any scientist, more than Gauss”.
Also, this quote is from the late Einstein, when he was more influential as a philosopher than as a scientist. I know that young Einstein was a big fan of Spinoza and Schopenhauer.
