You can still reason and think as complex as anyone else, but can't add very simple numbers no matter how hard you practice.
I guess it only affects concrete mathematics, so a person with discalula would likely make a poor engineer or accountant, as those occupations require on the spot thinking.
I think it's a real thing, but not common. Most people are just lazy.
