Honestly, what is the point of particle physics?
There seems to be vast swathes of the field that will literally never impact anyone outside of those in the field in any way. Knowing that niche theory A is correct instead of theory B might truly be incredibly brilliant and clever work within the field, but no practical device will ever exist at the energy scales necessary for such knowledge to be helpful to anyone.
The real questions I want answering: Can a particle physics discovery really impact the lives of humans for the better in any way? What have we gained from knowing of things like the Higgs field or the Top quark?
