personally I can't be sure we're not just meat robots.
When I look at how I do things I seem to have no control over any of it, so there is a good chance I (and probably other lizard people) don't have free will.
So if consciousness is just "I think therefore I am", then it might as well be anything. no need for it to be material or immaterial. just because you can't find a perfect explanation for it with current knowledge doesn't mean the answer lies beyond rationality.

Most theories of consciousness do not carry this assumption though

Any study of consciousness always gets steeped into complication bullshit amongst neurologists, psychologists, and philosophers. Any discussion among these asshats always leads to "it's too complicated for us to understand". Computer scientists post 2000 won't touch the question with a 20ft pole after their failure in the 90s.

My take is that programming code at the moment does not have the ability to modify or build on itself in a safe, constructive manner.

While neurons appear to be similar to transistors, they don't take a single input but can accept many inputs at once till they reach their threshold voltage to fire. Another problem is the density of neurons in the human brain is difficult to make even on a computer chip.

Another thing is that humans typically have ADHD, and can stop thinking or change thinking on a topic if it isn't posing as fruitful outcome. We can get distracted, which would explain why computer can effortlessly do calculations quickly.

More to the point, the "hard problem" Chalmers is asking is one that specifically assumes the soul/selfhood entity that experiences a subjectivity. If there's no selfhood/soul experiencing it, then subjectivity is merely becomes a neurological illusion. The pain/happiness are thus merely states with no actual mastermind enjoying or suffering it. This is the stance Buddhist have come to 2500 years ago.

Thank you for pointing this out. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this line of thought because it's worth exploring like all scientific endeavours, but it grinds my gears when people talk about consciousness when they, for all intents and purposes, mean "soul."

So many schools in psychology.

The science needs to get settled on other things.
And we also have to commit a few more human atrocities for medical science as well.
