With the latter the problem might be that those parallel universes would have to exist in the first place, but if you are a believer in the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics that's not a problem.
Novikov self-consistency principle seems obviously "wrong" and just a "cop-out" to many. But I don't think people in general do a very good job explaining what's the problem. Appeals to free will in the libertarian sense don't work because libertarian free will doesn't make sense anyway, with or without time travel. So you would have to show how it's a problem even with a more mundane, compatibilist idea of free will.
