>>11559578I always got the impression that he was cheeky towards mathematicians mainly since at the time, the mathematics in physics didn't touch more and more of the then breakthroughs in pure math. That being said, one also gets a sense that despite not liking how abstract pure math was, he had a lot of respect, especially when he says, "and then the poor physicist runs back to the mathematician and says 'oh could you go over the bit about more than 3 dimensions?'"
So at the end of the day, it was a cheeky rivalry as far as I can tell, since mathematicians and physicists have different priorities on what they study
