what we should be focusing on is a way of creating true vacuum, aka zero temperature space, that we can dump waste heat into to generate power. The universe will always be warmer than absolute zero, so if you can stick one end of a sterling engine into a bubble of zero temperature it should run forever. You don't need to be stuck with piddly little trickles of power in the black hole era either, because you could use the energy generated by your sterling engine to warm up the hot side of your sterling engine and increase the thermal gradient, at least until you start running into deformation or melting issues. Then you can siphon out the excess energy for infinite time, using it not only to power things but to run machines that generate protons and electrons from high energy photons, literally creating your own matter, and building yourself a new universe with your own hands.
