The Bacillus Calmette–Guerin (BCG) vaccine is a vaccine primarily used against tuberculosis (TB). In many wealthy OECD countires as well as many developing countries, it is a standard, mandatory vaccine part of the regular vaccination calendar.
However, in some wealthy countries, this vaccine was discontinued because TB was considered to be erradicated and thus the vaccine was considered no longer necesary. Other countries, where TB is also erradicated, continued applying the vaccine for public health reasons, just to be on the safe side.
Now, a Japanese study has found that the mortality for COVID-19 is much higher in countries that no longer demand BCG vaccinations. There are strong reasons to believe the BCG vaccine may provide some form of defense or immunity against COVID-19.
