Work means there isn’t one type of energy being converted in to another. Eg your body chemical energy (which is actually em energy in the end) into kinetic energy when you push something. Your body had ch energy, it transferred it to the thing you pushed, which we say you did work on it, and then that thing got kinetic energy
It’s merely a definition detail, but a useful one
