Sure, I dont to die, nor do I wish for thousands of millions to die, but if knowledge, technology and some of the basic infrastructure could be retained, it could be a good thing as far as restarting human progress. A bit like reloading a save of CK2 when you have gone and fucked up the inheritance laws.
Consider for a moment the progress which was made between 1900 and 1960. Now compare that to the progress between 1960 and 2020.
Economically the world is a ponzi scheme which is gradually running out of suckers. It did well to fuel the boom of the 20th century but now its beginning to look more like the scam it really was all along. Technology while not entirely stagnating has certainly slowed way the fuck down. Most of our efforts seem directed towards refining existing technology rather than inventing new ones. The level of environmental degradation just keeps getting worse, not talking about CC here, but other stuff that's been around for a century plus, like soil degradation, declining water quality, atmospheric pollution, habitat destruction, species extinctions, etc. The general population seems to be dumbing down. Apart from a few niche fields there is less innovation, less discovery. Politically we are still stuck using an archaic and very primitive collective decision making, "democracy" a system that has firmly entrenched itself, so its very hard to reform it and advance onto a more efficient and rational political structure.
If there was a hard re-start then I would like to imagine the survivors, once they got a couple of generations past the picking-up-the-pieces stage, would fight hard to ensure no repeat of the dumbass shit we do today. Like squandering sizable chunks of our resources on military spending. Like letting all people breed like rabbits while making it a disincentive for smart, productive, people to raise families.
