Practically speaking, how many viruses does it take to infect you?

If one virus is floating around and lands on you how likely are you to get sick? What about if someone injects a single virus into your body? What's the quantity of viruses before someone has greater than 1/2 odds of becoming sick?

Seriously though I'm wondering about a ballpark number.

I'm trying to get a picture of whether a single virus which your body isn't prepared for has free reign to start an infection of if you need thousands/millions/etc of them in the first place.

Also whether any given virus is likely to attempt to hijack a cell at some point or if only some fraction of them actually fall into the right configuration.

Depends on the type of virus and the medium with which you're being infected. For instance, some waterborn viruses can infect you with only 300 particles in liquids, but take several tens of thousands to infect you in food. But injecting only a single virus won't infect you, it's literally almost impossible for 1 virus to infect you unless you don't have an immune system.

So I guess your immune system has a high chance of detecting any cell being fucked with by a virus but after a while against specific ones it gets even higher?

What about cleanup? My impression is the only way the body can deal with viruses is killing its own cells. Do you really have to kill a cell for every few viruses you have floating around throughout the whole infection?

Your B cells can produce neutralizing antibodies to the virus that inhibit it's ability to enter new cells

I highly doubt anyone knows. What you're talking about is called a minimal infective dose, and it's going to vary depending on the person, the virus, and the means of transmission.
