Why is this board always so wrong? Why weren't we doing this from day 1? It is so fucking obvious that doing this helps, and yet you people screeched on about it not being effective.

There's plenty of studies which give reason to believe that masks *could* help, if not help substantially. There was absolutely no reason to recommend against them other than to prevent hoarding.

This, with one qualification: Masks give some people who use them a sense of security that is not justified by the level of protection they provide, and prompt some neglect of social distancing. In the beginning masks were only seen as being helpful with preventing people from touching their faces, not really from filtering out viral particles. Alot of people are stupid and will wear the same mask over and over (like with pic related), which could cause a fungal infection.
Science is progressive elaborative. If there is evidence now that wearing a surgical mask is more helpful than not against 2019-nCov, then we should wear them. No one knew before if these were effective filters against 2019-nCov because it is a recent virus, and it was safer to not recommend using them because people would hoard them just like toilet paper, but hospitals need these masks the most, especially when industry is slowing down. The real question is why are you using this to accuse all of /sci/ as being against science? If we now know that they are useful just wear then and move on.

That was never the point of wearing masks. The idea is that masks do prevent the wearer from spreading it.

This is only tangentially related, but has anyone seen or heard from pedantic people like myself to push for discouraging the term "Social Distancing" in favor of "Physical Distancing"? It's both more accurate in describing the physical phenomena that limits the spread of this kind of thing, it carries the instruction of how to do it within the name, and depending on how much credit you are willing to give to psychology it doesn't assign a subconscious negative connotation to the idea of 'socializing' which in the digital age is easier and faster than ever. One could argue that digital socializing should be encouraged to mitigate some of the anxieties introduced by this whole event, while still observing physical distancing to slow the spread.

That's why this whole thing is so infuriating, because they're supposed to be people who know what they're doing and that we can trust. The public did put their trust in them, and their bad advice potentially made the situation a whole lot worse. Now we have people who aren't so willing to change their minds after hearing the bad advice for two months, so it's up to us to provide correct information.
