TL;DR: I'd like to know what do I have to delve into in order to have useful and valid knowledge of statistics.

I'm a psychology student (undergraduate) who's on the route to publish his first paper alongside a group of other students.

We're gonna use SPSS to do the analysis for us.

However, I would like to understand statistics more, and how to actually do stuff.

I've been watching criticism of the field of data analysis. I don't want to simply be that guy who applies linear regression on the data body and checks if p < 0.05.

I already know how to program in Python (have written websites, scripts, solved mathematical problems on Project Euler, created basic GUI apps) and a little bit in C (Project euler stuff and a little of the K&R and CS50x (incomplete)) and I'm planning on starting to learn R when I finish reading the literature for our project.

My understanding of statistics is only high-level. I don't understand the nitty-gritty. What kind of math do I have to understand in order to git gud?
