>>11523659>i thought the radiation released created a surface of last scattering - an expanding sphere? That’s just the distance from which we’re receiving cosmic microwave background radiation still. Like sound, light doesn’t travel instantly, so at very far distances, there’s regions from which we’re only now receiving the CMB, and since the universe was opaque prior to recombination, that’s the oldest radiation we could receive. If the universe weren’t expanding, the “surface of last scattering” would be receding from us at light speed, but since our universe is expanding, its receding even faster. If we were to magically teleport to a location at the edge of our “surface of last scattering”, we’d find matured stars and galaxies, and if we then looked in the direction of Sol, we’d see what we see currently there, just the CMB.
