What century was the most fun to be a mathematician/physicists?
Today the fields have gotten too specialized and you can only hope to achieve a high degree of understanding, not to mention actually contributing to a tiny part of a tiny part of a tiny part of some subfield. Then again I'd imagine having to start off with nothing isn't that exciting either.
