Now that Chris "OH NO, THAT SUCKS" Cuomo was confirmed with corona virus, this invites us to a reflection.

Why are CNN and other big news channels constantly saying "RECORD NUMBER OF CORONAVIRUS CASES" on a known exponential growth high R0 disease? Do they understand it's exactly supposed to behave like this, where for a good while you get more deaths and more confirmed cases every day?

Whey are they knowingly and deliberately spreading panic over numbers, and why is the scientific community not shunning them for this?

Two reasons. Both are true.
First is that fear sells. The scarier and more shocking their headlines are, the more people watch them.
The second is that it's necessary. An unbelievable number of people STILL think this is a nothingburger. People thinking that has been legitimately dangerous for a while now. It's important to convey to the public that the situation is serious, and if you don't drown it in hyperbole your average numbskull won't listen; that's how modern media works.

Ironically I think movies conditioned the meme in us that panic was more dangerous than the threat itself, when in reality people don't give a fuck until they personally observe that things are really bad.

This was obvious from the beginning. "Panic" meant 1% of the population trying to buy all the toilet paper and failing. I'll take panic any day if it means some people are actually ready for the virus.

The real shit, like looting and rioting comes with the economic fall out of the virus when people can't pay their rent. That can still happen in major cities and it has nothing to do with alarmism.

Honestly I think the panic is good. The more afraid people are of getting it the more they'll self isolate and the faster this whole thing will pass. People need to be afraid or they won't be motivated to change their behavior.
