Why are Buzzfeed and Vox the only ones reporting on KN95's in the US? Is there a legitimately founded reason the FDA won't approve them, or is it just "Chinese standards bad"? They seem to be just as effective as N95's, and we could ease our respirator shortage quite a bit by approving them.

They were saying surgical masks don't help enough to be worth it. They acknowledged that respirators work, but they still advised not to buy them so hospitals would have enough.
Now it seems they may reconsider the advisory on surgical masks, and they'll have everybody wear respirators if/once there are enough of them.

the recommendations against all americans wearing masks was because we barely had a week's supply in our reserves for our existing healthcare workers if they were using them appropriately (one per person, discarding every 8 hours). at that rates, we would burn through our stockpiles in short order, and that's assuming regular citizens weren't using them.

They also lied and said the masks wouldn't work and had no benefit for the general public. They should've told people not to buy masks even though they help because there is a shortage and only because there is a shortage, and that people should make their own to stop spreading of germs while asymptomatic. Instead everyone with half a brain cell just mistrusts them now. People who cook and handle food should be wearing home made masks and they aren't.

Masks are only useful for infected people to use when they are in close proximity to uninfected people.
