when we consider a wave function, what exactly is oscillating?
Every time we consider waves in classical mechanics, it's energy travelling as a result of an oscillation.

no it isn't. the probability oscillation can be given by the magnitude maybe, but energy still needs to oscillate in some form to propagate.
