What can explain the diminishing quality of academic research, and the ever increasing quality of private and corporate research and development?

The quality of academic research has always been bad, but it seems as though it's getting worse.

Is it.due.to the shortcomings in management?

Less funding, and a higher proportion of it going to admin rather than useful people. Fuckwits are running things in academia instead of academics.

Illusion due to the lack of research done in the public sector. Traditionally, we would have better research (which isn't immediately profitable) done by the government, which would open gates for private companies to use that infrastructure to further innovate and make profitable. Private research is not at that level because they only research something if it's immediately profitable.
>Self-driving cars, AI neural networks, etc. are not immediately profitable.
What I mean by the term is that it is immediately clear that a profit will be made. Larger companies are able to invest further into more long term goals.

1. There is no difference between "academic" and "private" research because all the top schools are private and work with companies directly
2. The general decline of research in general is due to China and India flooding the market with crap papers
3. The general decline of private research quality is due to investors taking a fast and loose approach to science in the hopes of getting venture capitalist money

All three are going go end due to the recession wiping out investors' savings though. It fixes itself.

How so? Marxist-style experimentation is the only reason why we have good science agencies like the Dept of Energy who has spearheaded our nuclear fusion efforts for it's entire existence. Even less popular agencies like CA's CARB offers practical industrial science research.

If you don't understand what the specific troubles of academia are yet complain about its lack of quality in research, you're more than likely somebody outside of the whole system who wants a snappy 3-5 line answer so you can copypasta the reasons against academic research or anyone who wants to get a PhD
