Hey guys, 24-year old dropout fag trying to get into university for Computer Science by 2022.

Can someone explain how to solve this? They appear to be equivalent when using Desmos graphing calculator, but not algebraically.

No, they are not defined over the same domain. No reasons to do any calculations beyond that.

literally just plug in -1 and you'll see that the first is undefined there because the denominator cancels, and the second gives you a sensible answer. dont do anything beyond that or theyll think ur a brainlet

$f(x)= \frac{2x^2-4x-6}{x+1}$
$= \frac{2x^2+2x-6x-6}{x+1}$
$= \frac{2x(x+1)-6(x+1)}{x+1}$
$= \frac{(2x-6)(x+1)}{x+1}$
$= 2x-6$

Now for $g(x)$ ,

$g(x) = 8x^2-2x(4x-1)-6$
$= 8x^2 -8x^2 +2x-6$
$= 2x-6$

Hence it can be see that $f(x)=g(x)$

The function f defines a rational expression which is undefined at x = -1 since it produces a zero denominator. Meanwhile, g(-1) is well defined and has an integer answer. They cannot define the same expression.
