Butyl acetate and isobutyl acetate are structural isomers, meaning their molecules have the same number of atoms, with the only difference being the arrangement of the atoms. But this tiny difference completely changes the smell. And they're easy to make at home! I mix the alcohol with a 3 molar excess of acetic acid, a few drops of sulfuric acid, and reflux for 5 hours.
Alcohols are cool too. Alcohols themselves have interesting aromas, and they're fun to make. In picture related I show a reaction I plan to do. First I would convert isopropyl alcohol to 2-bromopropane, using hydrobromic acid that i made myself from pool tablet sodium bromide. Then I would add it to anhydrous ether with magnesium turnings to make the grignard reagent, then add acetone....
