Doesn't the notion of free will explain the problem of evil?

Without true free will, we would have no true control, and therefore no true responsibility for our actions, yeah?

And if evil didn't exist, then why pass judgement?

Typical theist response is that God is responsible only for the good in the world. You need to have evil as long as there is good it's the unity of opposites. We only know what evil is insofar as it is the opposite of some good. That or there are no morals and we're fundamentally selfish creatures and evil is anything that makes our life worse.

Without getting to any problems of that explaining away "freely chosen" acts of evil by humans, what it most obviously fails to explain is suffering caused by disease, natural disasters, accidents etc.

Not a materialist, but I think an argument can be made for punishing criminals without free will. A criminal is basically a defective machine which does more harm than good and should be separated from society in prison. It's the same reason we would like to eradicate the coronavirus. We aren't "punishing" the virus because it's evil, we're making the practical decision to get rid of it so it doesn't cause more harm.

Well, I think a lot of people take the "only if you are in control can you be held responsible" thing for granted. Its not necessarily true. Its worth examining.

More importantly, what "control" means is a matter of degree and context. So, none of us control the laws of physics, or our past, or our basic make up and character. We didnt choose any of that stuff. But, thats not really what "control" means in a normal sense. We usually think of "control" like, the decision came from that person, and they had foresight about the consequences, and it is plausible and possible they could have made a different choice.

Free will and responsibility for ones actions derive from the fact that its legally and morally practical to tie individuals with their choices. It has nothing to do with whether or not people have some special mystical will that exists independently of the physical universe.

Free will is a different issue.

The problem of evil is why God, a perfectly good entity would/could create evil. So, even if he meant it for the purposes of freewill//judgement, that wouldn't explain why a 100% good being would create something evil..

One classic answer is that evil doesn't exist per say, and that evil is just a lack of good.. so evil is more like 1% good, rather than a full 85% good or something.

So, you can still pass judgement on how good someone is, without there actually being evil..

Well if you can cop out with "We dont know God's intention" why cant you say that to "Why is there Evil?" as well?
