I can barely focus on things I actually want to do, much less ones I need to do. And in my case those pills were practically worthless after a few years. Prozac is the only that consistently worked, but it made me feel like a damn zombie.

People can have attention deficit at any age. Amphetamine and methylphenidate work on anybody. Instead of limiting them to people deemed to have a “mental illness”, anybody that can pay them should be able to use stimulants at his/her decision. There was another drug I would take in the morning but I can't remember what it was called. My official diagnosis was ADD but I wouldn't be surprised

Tired is bad because it impairs your performance. Zoned out, I think you mean what is called dissociation and derealization in the literature in which case it is neutral.

It is not supposed to be.

What dose did you take? The ED50 for SERT blockade on oral route for fluoxetine is 9.1 mg (source Meyer et al. (2002) as cited in <https://n2t.net/ark:21206/10023>;). Usually people are put on much higher doses.

If you need help to focus, get a prescription for amphetamine or methylphenidate. Although fluxoetine can help a bit, it is only a side effect. The main effect of SSRIs is blunting emotions. Do not take SSRIs if you do not want their main effect.

40mg, a dose I'd been getting since my early teens. Stopped taking it a couple years back, and I think I've been doing fine without it except for sleep. But taking prozac to make myself tired is a terrible idea, that's not their intended use. And now that you mention it, Ritalin was one of the ones I was prescribed to take in the morning for focus. After a while, even after my dosage was upped, it didn't feel like it was doing anything.

40 mg is very high. If you ever take fluoxetine again, I suggest to start at 5 mg per day. If methylphenidate did nothing, I suggest to get amphetamine (Adderall or Dexedrine).

Not being able to pay attention to classes is extremely harmful for one's existence in a world where basic 'no think' jobs don't pay properly. In addition people with ADD/ADHD usually can't pay attention to anything for very long, making it harder to develop their skills. I can't do anything, without zoning out, for more than an hour *at best* and falling asleep is really hard because my brain is always jumping from one random thought to another.

It was ok to be a sexual sadist if you were powerful. Nowadays times and attitudes have changed. If you have a problem with sitting inside and studying, for six hours, then yes, there is something wrong with you. Just like there's something wrong with sociopaths and schizos. We don't need ADHD people like the ancients did. If you can't control your mental issues, you take your behavior pills. If they cause issues with you, then you're subject to getting naturally selected out of this gene pool. After all, the thing that makes us most human is our ability to reject our nature.

There’s some kids that need to be strapped to a treadmill for the entire day. It goes far beyond not wanting to sit still in school. I’m leery of medicating children, though. I’d leave it as a last resort.

Mental disabilities are always constructed around prevailing social mores, conventions and desires. The problem is that going from the symptoms to the diagnosis is ultimately rather arbitrarily done and this is a known because readily observed issue since at least the medieval era. If however the diagnosis turns out to be nothing more than a simple classification of the person, because the diagnosis does not actually help to explain the symptoms, it simply names and groups them together and also fails to show the underlining neurological and biological correlates (that are in case of ADD/ADHD less than clear), why even bother?
