I'm going to be a senior next year and all I see is a future of unemployment. I've focused on what I thought were the important things (Getting research experience, getting field experience, learning useful lab skills, and learning to code) and I don't think people see me as someone worthy of paying because they can always just find someone to do it for free or better than me. I can't continue doing research unpaid because it takes a big time commitment and I need money and I don't think my research lab will ever pay me. I want to find another lab, but as a senior it feels like it's too late because it takes time to learn all the things involved in another area of research. I look at paid science jobs in my city and they all pay minimum wage and require years of experience, a long list of skills, and at minimum a bachelors degree. A masters will get you at most $14-15/hr as a technician. I could make more than that doing anything else. It's all so tiresome.
