Symbols for positivity/negativity are by convention on the left side of the further left digit representing a quantity
A-B is just a simplified manner of writing A+(-B)
All substractions are sums involving at least one negative absolute value, just like divisions are multiplications by a number to the power of -1

Because subtraction does not commute. It is shorthand for A + (-B), which is commutative, so you can evaluate that expression in either direction. Doing A - B in the opposite direction is the same as doing (-A) + B.
