Incremental reading for hard sciences

Did anyone here try to do incremental reading with supermemo and the likes on math/physics articles? What are your experiences?
The concept seems very interesting, but I can hardly imagine it being useful on articles that are essentially long proofs. How do you extract individual pieces of information which are worth converting into a flashcards and have meaning outside the context of the proof? There's also the issue that the mathematical notation scientific articles use are very inconsistent and the same symbols can mean very different things. If you are reading 100 articles in parallel you'll just lose track of them if you don't load a large part of the article into your working memory each time you switch articles, and you are supposed to do that pretty often if I get it right.
