A lot of jobs in neuroscience and biology in general seem to want skills with MATLAB and other languages. Any suggestions on getting started?

Just list some programming shit in your resume and then when asked say you took a class in it and if you get hired just google that shit. Not that the last part is ever going to happen but we can play pretend for the purposes of this thread.

I only took a few programming courses in college, lots of stats though

I listed "Academic experience in Python, SQL" on resume, and was hired as a data analyst

If you know the basics of the top ones (R, Python, SQL, MATLAB or SPSS here and there) you should be fine wherever.

Had to learn it on my own from reproducing operational analysis code on huge nested data sets of intensity based then autocorrelated spectroscopy data. Then generate filtered data to plot relative blood flow measurements and blood hemoglobin oxygenation/saturation data.

I had a copy of the matlab manual, the working source code, and google. Took a year to become semi competent. Good luck.

IMO matlab is the best for linear algebra, and thats about it. R is is the gold standard from my experience as it a nice balance between customizability while still somewhat understandable to non-comp sci people. Python has a steeper learning curve but is better for actual coding projects. No idea what people mean when they say "learn SQL" because you can just access servers through other languages.

Ok well you need a matrix. And then thats it. You can do all the things you can do with 1 or 2 D arrays in numpy in python or in C++ and all the things you can do with matrices.
Its good really good help just google anything you need to do is explained on MathWorks.
Also just type help and a function name in the command and it explains all the arguments etc.

Download matlab, get some textbook, handout or youtube course online and start doing code.
Learn the basics doing algorithms to math operations like solving systems, operations with matrices and some numerical calculus and also do the exercises in the textbook you are using.
Then you will have to learn the toolboxes of neuroscience and biology. Certainly there will be a lot online to help you like youtube videos and tutorials in mathwork's own website and code on github.
