It's a pathetic attempt at immitating an emotion when someone doesn't really feel it, usually beacause he (let's be honest, he) thinks he will be liked and desired by expressing himself in that way. Thats why it's cringe and usually people who do this often don't know how to express themselves properly in public which implies some form of retardation in socializing (and consequently ironically makes them unlikable and undisered lol). I have no clue as to why onions seems to amplify that behavior though.
