How true are these statements?, can a guy who clearly isn't good at numbers be an engineer, mathematician, physicist???

Is there even a known example of a person who used to struggle in physics and is now a renowned physicist? and the same with mathematics, etc.

IQ is the most important factor, motivation and productivity can be gained with stimulants/modafinil but you are stuck with the brain your genetics and early environment (i mean early as in prenatal) sculpted

That's the thing. The guy you're replying to is right but he, like most people on /sci/, are 100-115 midwits who got their ego inflated by online and childhood tests. Which is why you see many people here are coping through stimulants and various forms of cheating.
It's also why you see many people complaining about the education system. After all they're all 145+ IQ geniuses so how could they get bad grades? It must be the education system not valuing intelligence anymore, and not them being dumbass junkies, am I right?

It is atleast true for reputable schools. All engineering disciplines are harder then biology atleast. But at shitty schools those tend to be really easy.

I was wrong, 1/5th have a diagnosis of ADHD but only around 13% are on stims. Still a large figure.

The point I was making though is that tons of people would not have been able to hack it in terms of productivity, concentration and motivation without dopaminergic stimulants, so it is a malleable trait you can change to a certain extent, albeit at a steep cost. I am sure countless doctors the world over, for example, owe their success to taking medical grade speed for at least a few critical weeks of their academic careers. Whereas intelligence is much less amenable to interventions: dual n-back, playing musical instruments, aerobic exercise, the very best candidates all add up to paltry effect sizes, meager gains for tremendous effort at best.

No shit. They have to and you don't. A kid with ADHD who uses stims is on the same level as a clone of himself without ADHD. So when the clone without ADHD uses them it's cheating.

You ASSUME that they do because you're projecting yourself unto them. In reality most people don't use them.

me. I failed to multiply 2x3 in my interview for my current job. Adding numbers whose sum is greater than 10 takes me longer than the average idiot. I get 100 and 1000 mixed up sometimes. Calculators saved me in school. I work at a semiconductor company in R&D. Most of my coworkers hold me in high esteem for my mathematical modeling background.

Some people are naturally better at abstraction than application, but entry level classes tend to cover the latter, so you see students with garbage elementary/highschool math grades become decent pure math students in uni. On the other hand, there's plenty of retard savants that can multiply huge numbers in their head instantly but never really amount to anything. I don't think there are many people who are exceptionally good at both.

Well, can someone who's not able to read and write be a good writer? Or can someone who has a bad voice be a good singer? Maybe. But probably not a good one.

But then again some people may just underestimate themselves or not work hard enough.
