It's almost always taught that it's an area or a volume, but that's irrelevant if you want to understand it better you have to read a book like "Finite dimensional analysis" by Halmos or explore it on your own and try to understand each aspect of the detemrinant

3blue1brown videos are good for casual education but not actually learning things down to a tee. His videos aid in intuition, but it takes way more time and effort to understand these things in a way that isn't handwavy or overly romantic instead of precise.

Classes aren't structured in a way that favours explaining the ideas behind the formulas and rules that the students memorise.
Instead, they're made so that not so bright students who aren't even slightly interested in math can at least pass the classes, and hopefully remember at least one or two formulas.

I would add to this that they are taught to use basic formulas like tools to get to the next class or concept and learn more tools. It's like teaching a man to do his menial job, not the theory behind it or why he does what he does.

The picture does not tell you the value of the determinant, unless you know what A is. Here A is -1 or +1. Now you have to learn which. And the pic does not tell you that, nor why it is +1. Also the picture method does not work in higher dimensions.
