Are French undergrad maths programs really so much more difficult than those in the US? Or is this just the case for the grande écoles?

I'm at a top 5 US uni and have the opportunity to spend a semester at Paris 7, where I'd be taking L3 courses. If I get good marks at my home institution will I do ok? Or will the French fuck me with their superior aptitude for pure maths??

It is harder because it gets more rigor but that doesn't mean it's impossible. The brightest student at France is probably equal or dumber to the brightest at the US. Think of it as some sort of Caltech education, where everyone gets fucked because it is supposed to be like that.

Besides, the math they learn is basically the same math you would learn in the first 2 years of your typical Math major curriculum, so no worries.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you're doing a math major in the US, the curriculum should be sensibly the same as a "Licence" in France. And there's genius students wherever you go, but those don't reflect the average.
I assume you're taking classes in french though, so how are your language skills? Obviously the math itself is the same no matter the language, but getting the hang of the jargon can be tricky. Atleast in my experience.

Yes and no. It's not the grande écoles where the nutjobs are, it's the classes prépa (those are the two or three years you do before getting into the grandes écoles). That's where you find most of the students with "superior aptitude for pure maths".
Of course they end up in the grandes écoles afterwards, but (with a few exceptions) you're not doing pure math there anymore.
Anyway, there isn't much overlap between grandes écoles and universities, so don't worry about any of that.

Well, classe prépa is basically L1 and L2 of math and physics crammed into two years. Nothing exceedingly hard in there, it's only the required rigor and stress of competition that make it difficult.

In Grandes Ecoles we don't do shit, its in prepas where the maths is spicy af especially in the MP course
