What are some scientifically effective methods to quit 4chan?
My attention span is fucked up to the point that I can't even play a video game without pausing all the time and checking 4chan.

What else would you be doing? Does it bug you that you are wasting time? After browsing, make a note about how much fun you actually had. Compare that with the feeling you get after doing something hard but actually means something. That's it. Read a book. Go running. Do anything else and you'll notice how it compares with just mindless browsing

I might read a book or something, but to push yourself and start doing it every day is difficult. I might do it once or twice, or for a month, but then I will start neglecting it and return to lurking etc.

Find something else to do that doesn't involve an internet connected device. Do this until the need to check constantly starts to die away. It's no different from "internet addiction" when the internet was for nerds, or "smartphone/social media addiction" when the internet became normieized.

Also, evaluate why you visit. What are you looking for? What do you intend to get out of what you're looking for?

Set some sort of schedule. Identify something productive and set a time (10 minutes per day is a good starting point). Turn off phone. Close everything irrelevant on your PC. Record start time and end time each day on a piece of paper stuck to your wall. You are allowed to go to the toilet or drink water on this time up to 5 or so minutes. Increase task time by 10 min each day until you reach whatever time is useful. Add tasks and repeat per task or adjust method. It's working for me.

Look at that piece of paper each day before going to bed.

Crash out? Build it up again from 10 minutes

If time does't work, set some other measurement: pages read, facts memorised, repetitions...

There is no quick and easy unfortunately. As >>11495537 says: ask yourself what you are looking for. Significance?

Have a goal. Quitting 4chan or getting a girlfriend is not a goal. Don't make it unrealistic like building a city on Mars, unless you really believe in it. But make it something you believe is achievable and work for that. Everything else should fall in its place. Trying to fight with bad habits is like trying to fight a symptom instead of the disease. The disease is not having clearly defined goal in life. You don't have to tell it to anybody. I would even advice against it in real life. You can maybe discuss it anonymously.

The average use is about 3 to 4 years. Of course, there are out layers that have been here for a decade or more, but after a while, you realize that you are arguing stupid topics with teens-twentysomething that are repeated over and over again. Then maybe you'll visit one or two boards again. I use to come here because it is the least retarded sub-board but with so many people at home this is worse than the so-called "summer fags".

Now, if you excuse me, I'll check if there is something new at /gif/ and continue with my life.

Yeah I think this way too, but still I want to get more self disciplined. 4chan, reddit, youtube, social media have all completely fucked up my attention span. I can't get through a single page of a fucking book anymore. I feel like I've lost IQ points and my mind has melted into oblivion. 4chan is arguably the least toxic of all the sites I listed (surprisingly) but I want to detox.

My question is, for psych or neurosci people, will my attention span ever recover? Or have I fucked up my brain permanently by spending the past 10 years surfing the internet for dopamine hits?

I did it by finding and listening to music I like. Was easy cus combing through shitty music and findig ones I like isn't that different to browsing through 4chan. Afterwards I'd be able to spend nights lounging around doing practically nothing by listening to music. I have gotten into cutting and filing my nails frequently as a result (I focus a lot on the side of my nails and sometimes even poke a needle through there to separate the skin from the nail), but that's a more than good price to pay for spending whole nights browsing through reddit/4chan/whatever. After that, it shouldn't be too hard to read a book or do an assignment. I was gonna read Stephen King's Elevation, but the library is closed cus of the rona and I've already done all my assignments, which is why I've gone back to browsing through 4chan/reddit.
