What was so great about the Copernican and Keplerian model anyway? Everything they explained, so did the Ptolemaic. Sounds like they just wanted to be special, but they didn't predict anything better. It wasn't until Newton that their models were anything more than just models

It seems to me that Copernicus is only held up as the founding figure of the scientific revolution in retrospect. He had no actual evidence to support his theory and it wasn't a greater predictor of planetary positions than the geocentric model. Even Galileo and Kepler who had observational evidence, only suggested at the feasibility of heliocentrism. It was thanks to Newton that we now see heliocentrism as correct, so we look back at the first proponents as great heroes for their supposed foresight
