anon, what do you think is the very greatest discipline to study in order to further transhumanist pursuits unironically?

for reference i'm 25 and unemployed with an associate's in liberal arts, never cared about academics or bettering myself until about a year or two ago, now i'm getting ready to find a shit job and go back to school before it's way too late.

all joking and banter aside it's my dream to help research transhumanist pursuits, or at the very least, improve peoples quality of life as they age and help to extend the human lifespan/work towards the possibility to preserve the mind.

I've been thinking of biomedical engineering and maybe doing a masters/PhD in biophysics but I don't want to think too far ahead before I've ever started a bachelors program.

Reason for CompSci being that the only program I qualify for because of my shitty community college grades is an online program like WGU, and they only offer business and compsci pretty much and I don't care for business classes, so I'll be doing compsci so I can have a bachelors, then once I move there I'll shoot for another undergrad degree to bolster my academic background a bit and eventually try to further it with a graduate degree/phd

How are we the “original” when all of the atoms in our body are eventually replaced over our lifetime? Is my zygote the “original” or am I, or are we both the “original”? I definitely have none of the atoms left that were in my zygote. Your argument rests on critical assumptions about the nature of identity which can not be empirically investigated.
Am I merely a new form, a descendant of my zygote? I’d say so, and I’d say that some sort of machine mind in the far future that was based on my mind is also a descendant of me, if not per se “me”. I’m fine with that.

I’d agree, so if we replaced, say, our neurons with some sort of digital analog gradually over time, would we remain “us”?
What if we underwent dramatic neurogenesis, and our brains grew to vastly larger sizes, drastically increasing our intelligence? Surely many changes of viewpoint would occur, and new perspectives would form. Would that still be “us” in the loose sense that the fetus that emerged from my mother was “me”, albeit much less intelligent and aware? Surely it would, at least in the vague “I know it when I see it” way you go about assigning identity.

Brains are incredibly efficient, performing more computations than even the strongest computers while using orders of magnitude less energy and producing much less waste heat, so why not simply make the brain even bigger and stronger?

Genetically modify humans for greater gyrification and brain size, and/or increase the size of living brains by attaching grown cultures of neurons. Rejection is unlikely using your own stem cells, and the brain is plastic, so it’ll figure out something to do with them.
