Banning fossil fuels

What exactly would happen if the world magically agreed to completely ban all forms of fossil fuel extraction and burning in 10 years?
I always hear the argument that this is not possible, we still need some oil for the foreseeable future no matter what, but why? I can't think of anything that doesn't have a viable alternative that merely needs to be developed infrastructure for.

Plastics, asphalt etc can be made from plants and besides even the current stock can last a long time if proper recycling schemes are put in place. Producing fuel with electricity, like hydrogen, methane, ammonia, can power even ships, airplanes and rockets. Then there is only the question of producing enough electricity without fossil fuels, but that is solves by nuclear, and renewables wherever suitable. It will take time to build everything but you can be damn sure it can get done in 10 years if people had no choice and companies stood to make a lot of money by filling the demand in time.
