Old people have the most suppressed immune system and look where they are right now.
The original papers called for the joint use of cloroquine and azithromycin, an antibiotic. It looks like an extremely random choice, I still not believe it works.

Theoretically, this should have a similar effect on the virus compared to chloroquine minus the risk of immunodepression. You can take Vitamin D to mitigate cytokine storms.

Obviously there's a major flaw in this approach or else it would be used already, just trying to understand it.
