living meaninglessly in comfort is an opposite to dying. dying tends to be equated with discomfort, pain, and suffering.
for whatever reason, "comfort" is desireable while "discomfort" is undesireable.
we see the ones we love die, and then they stop responding. and that creates sadness and confusion.
why aren't they moving anymore. where did "they" go?
did their conciousness end? What does it even mean for your conciousness to end? did their conciousness go somewhere else?
longing. missing. confusion. sadness. loneliness. without knowing what happens during death, it is not a viable gamble to approach death, so we avoid death and live, even when living seems meaningless. for even when living seems meaningless, we would desire that it be meaningful.

The most true thing I have found for a purpose is life is one that I self-constructed. Meaning does not exist out of meaning that was directly ascribed by conscious beings. A brush falling from a table due to an earthquake has no meaning. A brush falling from a table because I swept all the things off my table dramatically, has meaning. So make your own meaning, figure out what you want to do.
