I wouldn't say they're useless, you could treat them as an upper bound. So the absolute maximum mortality rate is 3.4% with an actual number very likely to be much lower. Given how contagious this is and given how long the incubation period is, and how the mild cases are indistinguishable from a common cold or flu, it's reasonable to suspect there are a lot of cases going around we don't know about.
