Where did it come from? Neanderthals? I wish we knew what kind of hair the humans who left Africa had.

probably it evolved in humans as an adaptation for cold weather. in africa, wiry hair helps because it acts as a radiator/evaporator in constantly hot weather. the straight hair gene for cold weather apes probably got revived after moving to colder climates. whether or not the straight hair gene reactivating from our earlier ancestors is due to neanderthals is dubious since they are a small fraction of europeans and nearly 0 of the genome for other cold-weather humans who developed mostly straight hair

It varies. Seems like straight hair is more common in northern Europeans while hair becomes more wavy or curly the farther south you go. Obviously there are outliers and today there are many ways to change how one's hair appears. Fore example my hair is very wavy but if I cut it short it looks fairly straight.
