The corona crisis is hailed as a period of regeneration for nature and a break for climate change due to reduced traffic and industry pollution. However with people sitting at home they spend more of their time in digital spaces, streaming, tweeting and also working. This increases internet traffic which is fuelled by energy consumed in data centers, which also produces lots of pollution and greenhouse gases. Even little Greta calls for "online climate protests" and is apparently not aware that the ecological footprint of data centers is projected to rival air traffic in the years to come.
How is the reduction of physical traffic and increase of internet traffic currently balanced out?
