With our current understanding of physics, wormholes are pretty much the only option that would make it possible, and even they are (so far) purely theoretical and likely too unstable for human transport in such theory.

I'm not referring to star's outside the Milky Way, also not asking for faster than light-travel.

Honestly, this scenario refers to near light-speed travel within our galaxy (100,000 lightyears wide with an estimated 40 billion habitable planets.)

What stops them from being able to without wormholes? Fuel/Energy?
